HOW TO USE PAF

These are just “Get You Started” notes and are not comprehensive instructions.

First click on the 3 tabs until you understand what they do – which is to give you 3 different views of your data. Note that whatever person is highlighted on any tab will stay highlighted as you swap to other tabs

Clicking on the column headings in the Individual List for RIN or Name will sort the data

Clicking on any name in any view allows you to edit the inf. Clicking on an empty box in Family or pedigree views allows you to enter info for that location.

Try the arrows at the extreme left & right on family or pedigree screens. The red arrow always takes you back to the start person

SEARCH / ADVANCED FILTER FOCUS.

As you select from your entire file (by different methods) the selected records are marked in the list as >>. To see the selected records only tick Show Results Only

Try making a simple filter. Click Define and use > to move Sex to the right hand pane. Then select Male and press OK. You can also do this for particular dates, places or combinations of both.

Your individual list on the Filter screen now has males only marked >>. Perhaps also manually mark >> a few selected females in the individual list

To make a new file of these selected individuals only, close Filter Focus by clicking OK without first clearing the filter. Then go into Export and click back and forwards between All and Partial and note that on Partial a number appears next to individuals. Then click on the Export button and there give your new file a name.

Your new file will be a Gedcom file. To view it in PAF, open and name a new Paf file. Then use Import and select your new gedcom file from the list. This is how you import any Gedcom file.

REPORTS

First select (highlight) any individual on any of the 3 main tabs before you go into Print Reports. The report you select will relate to that individual. An important and very useful feature of this the is Prieview button

Another useful thing to do is to view / print a list the “Possible Problems” list
